"A good statistical technique makes bad research data look worse "

The Problem:

Statistical data is generally analyzed professionally using one of the most advanced statistical packages, such as SAS, SPSS, S-PLUS, STATA, etc... However, it is impossible to take raw straight from the field to the statistical for analysis.  Some statistical procedures require for example that the analytical variable be free of missing values.  Some of the following activities must take place:

• A database containing all your data must be developed.  For databases could be developed in Excel.  Bigger databases may require the use Access, or one of the advanced statistical packages. This supposes that variable names must be given to each factor with data.

• The next stage will be data cleaning.  This step, aimed at ensuring consistency between variables, and validity of collected data, can be time-consuming.  

• It may also be necessary to merge two or more databases in order to create a single database ready for analysis. 

• Several derived variables my need to be calculated so that some statistical techniques can be implemented.
